In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is an infertility procedure where fertilization occurs outside of the female body. Fertilization happens inside a petri dish or test tube after the female egg has been extracted from the female body. A sperm sample is then carefully inserted into the egg.

In-vitro fertilization is highly recommended for women who have an ovulation disorder, who suffer from blocked fallopian tubes, or those with serious genetic illnesses. In actuality, in-vitro refers to a succession of procedures, and not just to one particular medical event. Mature eggs must be collected from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm and implanted into the uterus.

There are five stages for IVF fertilization to occur.

The first is Ovarian Stimulation. Once a surrogate mother has been established for a recommended reproductive program, this stage incorporates the stimulation of ovaries. Traditionally, there are three different protocols that can be used in this stage. These are short, long and extended (super long) stimulation processes. All three protocols utilize the same process. Initially, the female donor is prepared for stimulation. Next, follicle growth is conducted by means of hormonal treatment where ultrasounds and physician visits are used to monitor this stage. The second stage is referred to by the medical procedure of puncturing follicles. In this step, once follicles have reached a desired developmental stage, prior to artificial insemination taking place, follicles are collected by using specialized follicle puncturing needles to extract carefully identified follicles along with donor eggs. This procedure monitors the donor’s health, as anesthesia is commonly used, in conjunction with ultrasound under the close supervision of a medical reproductive specialist.

The third stage then takes place with the cultivation of embryos. Within this stage, processed sperm and eggs, that have been previously identified, are combined within a nutrient medium for fertilization to occur. The development of the embryo must reach a specific point, usually taking anywhere from 3 to 6 days, before the transfer stage takes place. Fertilization at this point involves this cultivation process that is closely monitored to ensure the optimal environmental conditions for the developing embryo. Once this fertilization process is complete and the desired developmental stage of the embryo has been reached, the embryo(s) are prepared to be transferred into the surrogate’s uterine cavity. Unlike the previous medical procedure of puncturing follicles, within the second stage of the IVF process, the insemination process is a painless procedure. This procedure is performed with the use of an elastic catheter and ultrasound. Once the transfer of the embryo into the surrogate is complete, the practice of prescribing prescription medications for the surrogate to take to help create and maintain the desired environment for the embryo to attach and develop is common place.

Diagnosing the state of pregnancy is the final stage in the IVF process. This is accomplished by a blood screening. Blood screening in search of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is one of the earliest and most reliable detection methods for early diagnosis of pregnancy. This screening takes place 10 to 15 days after the fourth stage of artificial insemination has occurred.
